SOUTH VANCOUVER LL - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

South Vancouver LL (4-2) upset the favored High Park Braves LL

team (6-0) from Toronto 4 - 1. The game was scoreless through four

innings when South Vancouver scored three runs in the top of the

fifth. High Park countered with a solo homerun in the bottom of

the fifth but that was all the offensive they could muster against

South Vancouver pitching.

South Vancouver LL is now off to the Little League World Series

SEMI-FINAL SATURDAY - AUGUST 9TH

ONTARIO 7   QUEBEC  6

LYNX LOSE BY ONE - ALMOST MAKE HISTORICAL COMEBACK

“Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fail”
Frank Martinez

In the semi-final portion of the tournament, the NDG Major Lynx faced off against the tournaments only undefeated team, the High Park Braves who represented Ontario and went 6-0 in the round-robin portion of the tournament.

For those who watched the game on-hand or via the web cast, this game was truly an exciting game to watch.  It all started off with the High Park team scoring first by compiling one run in the first, four in the third, and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

Up until the start of the fifth inning, the Major Lynx were actually hitless with only one base runner via a base-on-ball. However, in the top of the fifth that was about to change. Jonathan Zapata broke up the Ontario no-hitter and shutout with one swing of the bat to make the score 7-1. Then a  base hit by Brandon Hernandez-Perez, Andru Tecce reaching via an error, Scott Quavavauq earning a walk, Jonathan Alexandridis was able to drive in a run with a fielders-choice. Then with with two out and the bases loaded Alfonso Villalobos drove in three more runs with a long single that would make the score 7-5 going into the top of the 6th and final inning.

Lynx Pitcher Jonathan Alexandridis, who replaced Tristan Vargas in the 4th inning, would put down the High Park batters in order 1-2-3 leaving open a chance for the Lynx to come back in the bottom of the inning.

The top of the sixth would actually start exactly the same way as the top of the fifth inning did. Jonathan Zapata hit a solo homerun, his second of the game, to make the score 7-6. Then Brandon Hernandez-Perez would single and steal steal second base to place the tying run on second base with no one out. However, unfortunately the comeback for the ages was not to be. The High Park Braves relief pitcher  Will Cuylle, with a tournament ERA of 1.05, including 8 strike-outs outs in  six innings pitched, shut down the Major Lynx comeback striking out two along the way.

The Major Lynx really gave the High Park Braves a run for their money and should be very proud of their team's never say die attitude. The Lynx team proved to all that they are one of the best 11-12 year old teams in Canada and should be very proud of their efforts and season accomplishments.

GREAT SEASON GUYS - WE ARE ALL PROUD OF YOU ALL

MAJOR LYNX BEAT BC 4 - 3  TO FINISH 4TH

OFF THE SEMI-FINALS VS ONTARIO SATURDAY

Video - CBC'S Doug Gelevan Reports on NDG vs BC Game

Down 3-0 to BC in the 4th inning, Jonathan Zapata tied the game up with a 3 run homerun. Then Brandon Hernandez-Perez followed Jonathan with a solo homerun to give the Lynx a 4-3 lead.

Pitcher Jonathan Alexandridis came into finish the last two innings and only gave up one hit while striking out four.

NDG Junior Lynx Tournament Summary

JUNIOR PICK-UP NATIONALS EXPERIENCE

The NDG Junior Lynx wrapped up the tournament without a win but had two very close games where either team could have come out the winner (versus Lethbridge 3-2 &  versus Nova Scotia 13-12).

The Lynx also had some prominent hitters during the tournament with Ryan Antel finishing 2nd overall in hitting with a batting average of .632 going 12 for 19 with 8 RBI's and three doubles. Vincent Rizzolo finished fourth in hitting with a .556 batting average going 10 for 18 with a double and four runs scored. Francisco Hernandez-Perez was 5 for 14 (.357) with a home run and also led the Lynx team with 9 runs scored.

I'm sure these young men will take the experience of this years tournament and apply it to this years winter training and next years season.

Special thanks to head coach Sam Antel for taking on the task of running this team. Without Sam stepping up in the head coach role, their actually would have never been a team this year. Thanks also to Humberto Bierd and Mike Taylor for assisting Sam on his coaching staff. Also thanks to Chris Patterson who helped out the team during practises when he could.
