Rising above Adversity - Natasha proves she's got game

By Irwin Rapoport

Wednesday,  July 26th, 2000
Despite insults from players on opposing teams, NDG first baseman Natasha Gangai has learned to ignore them and continue to improve her game.

Being the only female player in the Quebec Elite Baseball League, Cote des Neiges's Gangai knows she can always count on the support of her NDG Lynx teammates.

"A lot of times (opposing players) say things just to be mean and keep me off my game," said Gangai, 16. "In our last game, I picked a guy off and his team kept yelling 'knock her down'. I guess I hear this type of stuff a lot."

"I really don't care what they say - it  has no effect on my game," she added. "My opponents only say this when they get to first base, so my teammates don't hear it. I told them once about this and they said that the next time it happens, that they'll take care of it."

Gangai, who grew up in Dollard des Ormeaux, started her baseball career with the town's house league at six years old and three years later, began to play with the town's intercity squads.

When her family moved to Cote-des-Neiges in 1996, Gangai took a three year break from the game, only to return this summer.

"I missed the sport and I wanted to play again," she said. "Watching my brother play for NDG rekindled my interest and now we both play on the same team. We support each other. We may bug each other at home but once we're on the field, we only think about the team.

While Gangai's brother Chris is hoping to make a career in baseball, Natasha simply enjoys the thrill of the game.

"We have  a lot of team spirit, which makes the game a lot more fun," she said. "I don't feel any pressure playing first base, but it's a different story when I'm occasionally asked to relieve a pitcher."

Gangai is still not sure if she will play baseball next season, but is leaving her options open.
